Surf the Internet using Wimax

If we go to the mall, Star bucks, we can now surf the ineternet using wifi. Most of us when surf are using either 802.11b and 802.11g.

802.11b -> Speed is up to 11Mbs
802.11g -> Speed is up to 54Mbps
Wimax -> Speed is up to 70Mbs

Even at home, most ISP now when you subscribe, they will give a Wireless modem, either b or g version so that you can surf internet wirelessly from home.

For now, most Hotel and ISP provides hot spot, so that when you check in you can surf the web using your laptop. Mc Donald, Star bucks, Burger King, most of them have it, but each one of them will have to have a wireless router. because the range for the 802.11b and g is very small. (about 30-400 metre). The solution to make sure they can cover the whole shop or the whole mall, they will have to put a couple of repeater or router to make sure they can cover the whole area.

So what is WiMAX? Its an acronym for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access.
WiMAx is a standards-based wireless technology that provides high-throughput broadband connections over long distances
WiMax is better in here, It beats all the 802.11a/b/g for range and speed. The theory for WiMax it can cover 50 Km (31 miles) with just a single product. 31 Miles ???? Oops. The speed can hit up to 70Mb/s. So in practical WiMax can be a cost saving for the ISP where they can reach lots of customer with just a single wi-max product.

The antenna for a WiMax can be shared using the current Cell-Tower for mobile Phone. So perhaps it will be advantage for mobile companies.

And with this, imagine, they can even provide a home customer that doesnt have a "cable" and "phone" at home with an internet connection. So the potential for WiMax is very good too for home user.

Some known companies that supporting this technology are Nokia, Intel, Motorlla.

Please take note that WiMax wil not replace Wifi 802.11X. Wi-Max is for metro area, while Wifi is good for Local Area network. So for typical home, a wifi is sufficient. You do not want to provide your home computer data up to 31 Miles away he he he :).

Currently WiMax product not a lot yet, by end of 2006, hopefully we can see more WiMax products available in the market. I will definitely want to try to surf the internet with this :).

Cya.
